There are a variety of ways you can work with your students in order to prepare them for a successful school year online. Some of these suggested ways include:

Review the Student Category

LLS has carefully created and curated a group of resources in the Lincoln Learning Help Center to assist students in navigating the Lincoln Empowered products and services. The resources assist students in completing an activity, submitting an assessment, locating teacher feedback, and more.

LLS recommends you take the time to review the Student category with your student, so each of you understands how to effectively use the Lincoln Learning curriculum and products to which they have access.

Set Expectations

Parents and students should come to a mutual agreement about how and when students should be using their devices for both in-school and personal activities.

Device Time

Families are encouraged to collaborate and determine a plan for device usage. Work with your student to figure out how much time during the day it will take them to use electronics to complete their school work and adjust the amount of time devices are accessed for personal use accordingly.

When appropriate, find ways your student can take their learning offline and into the real world. This will help them apply key concepts they've learned to their everyday life and will limit their time online.

Finally, you and your student should decide what time is acceptable for ceasing all device usage. Identify a central location in the household, where any device can rest and recharge for the night. Not only does allow for the student to get a good night sleep, but it also ensures all devices are charged and ready for use in the morning.

Appropriate Use

Appropriate use involves what is or is not acceptable for students to share while engaging online. Helping your student understand the difference is a step to assisting them in safely interacting in all online environments

Acceptable to share:

  • Google Folders with your teacher if applicable
  • Images of your assignments without your face
  • General interests and hobbies

Not Acceptable to share:

  • Any personal information such as full name, birthdate, address, etc.
  • Pictures which include your face
  • Passwords

If using a school-issued device, your district may have an acceptable use policy in place to assist you and your student in correctly using the device to access educational materials. Please contact your school representative for more information.

Ethics of Learning

Whether you have a younger learner or an older student, your child needs to understand how to learn and share their knowledge ethically. Reviewing your institutions honor codes and AI usage policy with your student will help you both in understanding expectations and holding your student accountable

Create a Schedule

Schedules assist students in knowing how their day is structured. They lessen anxiety when it comes to transitioning and help students to move seamlessly throughout their day. Schedules should mirror a complete brick-and-mortar classroom experience.

Tips for Creating a Schedule

  • Involve your student in the process
  • Design it to be fun, colorful, and interactive
  • Post it in a high visibility area
  • Include breaks for snacks, physical activity, and creative play

TIP: See the example schedules below for inspiration.

Preparing a Learning Environment

Having a dedicated space to complete school work is imperative to the learning experience. A well-prepared learning environment should encourage students to remain focused and allow them to successfully access everything they need for success.

Here are some dos and don'ts for setting up an education workspace.

Dos

Don'ts

  • Have a singular designated spot for learning.
  • Sit at a table or desk with feet placed firmly on the floor.
  • Set up the space to suit the learner's taste and preferences.
  • Have all activity materials easily accessible in the learning environment.
  • Bounce around from one area to another to complete learning activities.
  • Lay on a bed or lounge on a couch.
  • Create a space that is not inspiring to the learning or overly distracting.
  • Have activity materials in inaccessible places or in places where the learner must leave the learning environment to find them.
