Curriculum Overview
The Lincoln Empowered Grades 9-12 courses help to round out students’ education by providing a variety of pedagogically sound and standards-aligned courses in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies as well as within elective offerings. In these courses, students continue to build valuable skills that prepare them for post-secondary coursework, trade schools, and/or employment within the workforce.

Top Facts
- The courses are designed so that students can navigate easily through the courses with full, moderate, or little facilitation. Instruction and presentation are intuitive so that students can focus less on navigating the technology and more on experiencing the content.
- Courses are offered in a variety of delivery modes to ensure students are receiving exactly what they need. Course offerings are available in full-year, semester, Credit Recovery, and Auto-Graded formats.
- In addition to the core courses, there are numerous elective courses, world language courses, NCAA-eligible courses, and CTE courses for students to follow their passions and enhance their existing skill sets.

Learning Object Design
Lessons are driven by behavioral, age-appropriate learning objectives that are based on subject and grade-appropriate national standards. The content is supported by text, imagery, audio, and video. Lessons may include fewer subtopics; however, subtopic content is likely more detailed and longer in length. Students complete assessments both online and offline, thus still infusing hands-on application of manipulatives and experiments as well as writing opportunities and research. Courses include a Course Resources folder that houses a course pacing guide and materials list along with any other vital references or resources.
Activity Time
- Per lesson is an average of 45-60 minutes.

- 1 Lesson = 1 Day of learning (1 hour) per course.

English Language Arts
Content Specifics
- The English Language Arts (ELA) 9-12 core courses are full-credit courses with 180 days’ worth of lesson content written to unpacked national Common Core standards. In addition to the core ELA courses, there are a number of half-credit core elective English courses.
- The ELA courses in these grades continue to focus on improving the proficiency of students in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Students encounter plenty of opportunities for reading a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, and informational texts; literary excerpts are infused in both the content, as well as the assessments, with a list of literary text and novel suggestions included in the Course Resources object.
- Where applicable, courses contain digital worksheet and literature collections which are available within the course in PDF format. Worksheets can also be completed online using Google Drawings.
Activity Design
- Students encounter a variety of activity types including videos, games, simulations, interactive learning objects, and interactive activities and quizzes.
Assessment Structure
- Students take various types of graded assessments in the ELA courses including auto-graded Checkpoints, teacher-graded assessments known as Assess Its, and larger summative assessments known as Mastery Assess Its.
- Courses may include Apply Its, and where graded, they are also referred to as Assess Its. Apply Its are larger, project-based assignments that may cover more than one standard.
Mathematics

- The mathematics 9-12 core courses are full-credit courses with 180 days’ worth of lesson content written to unpacked national Common Core standards. In addition to the core mathematics courses, there are a number of half-credit core elective mathematics courses.
- Course content in the mathematics courses is supported by adequate practice.
- Many of the problems are tied to real-world application and calculation. The lessons emphasize the mathematics needed and found in everyday life.

- The science course offerings consist of a mixture of foundational sciences as well as additional specialty electives.
- The courses are infused with hands-on and interactive experimental learning with labs and research along with digital simulations that allow students to apply concepts tangibly and critically. Where applicable, a course kit can be purchased with all of the course kit items needed to do a wide array of experiments and conduct scientific observations from the comforts of your home or school setting.

FAQ
Q: Why are there multiple courses available for a specific target grade?
A: As students enter the high school level, they begin to differentiate their educational pathways based on various factors. Students are given more flexibility in course selection based either on their individual or school’s preference. For example, there are additional social studies and science courses available, though all have a specific focus and are developed using the same methodology as all Empowered courses.
Q: What electives are available for students in the 9-12 courses?
A: Students in the 9-12 courses are encouraged to take elective offerings to broaden their interests and expand upon their knowledge sets.
